These alloys when heated at about 500-525o C, in contact with cracked ammonia and nascent nitrogen diffuse into surface and form complex alloy nitrides imparting very high hardness resulting in high wear resistance and corrosion resistance besides anti spalling properties. Nitriding Steel containing Al develops hardness up to 1100 HV.
